Open Farm Day

NEW MILFORD, Conn. - For the past 24 years, The Nature Conservancy in Connecticut has celebrated the beauty and environmental significance of our 1,900-acre Sunny Valley Preserve with a celebration open to the entire New Milford/Bridgewater community. Open Farm Day has allowed area families to experience a local working farm environment every fall, and this September will be our 25th event!  On Saturday, Sept. 23, please join us as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Sunny Valley Preserve’s Open Farm Day and help make this year’s event bigger and better than ever!

The event takes place at 8 Sunny Valley Lane in New Milford, CT, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to Open Farm Day is free of charge. New to our celebration this year are pony rides for children and adults, border collie herding demonstrations followed by a meet and greet with the dogs and ducks, and sheep demonstrations! Then enjoy a hayride, pet some friendly farm animals, meet some gentle oxen, learn all about bees, choose the perfect pumpkin and paint it, and be sure to arrive early to get your face painted with farm animal designs by Village Center for the Arts artists. Enjoy all the ongoing activities while listening to music of The Blue Yodels, and make sure to pick up a scavenger hunt list to learn new and interesting facts all around the farm!

For those wanting to make a family day of the event, the New Milford Youth Agency will be selling lunch, including organic hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and vegetarian fare.  You can even start the day with a delicious farm-fresh brunch of frittatas, scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit and salad catered by Executive Cuisine (beginning at 10 a.m.). Tickets are $9.99 for individual adults or $24.99 for a family of five. Children five and under are free.  Tickets are available at and are limited. A minimal number of tickets may be available at the door.

“We want kids to have a really good time, and have the opportunity to learn what goes on at working farms,” Wayne Woodard, director of sunny valley preserve, said. “Open Farm Day is our way of thanking our community.”

Sunny Valley, which is part of the Connecticut holdings of The Nature Conservancy, is home to five different farms in Bridgewater and New Milford. These range from a farm that sells raw milk to a large haying operation to one of Connecticut’s biggest CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture). One farm is the first grass-fed beef operation in Connecticut recognized by A Greener World along with being certified as “Animal Welfare Approved” by the Animal Welfare Institute. In addition, Sunny Valley comprises open spaces where birds, deer and rabbits can be seen and a network of walking and cross-country skiing trails that are open to the public from dawn to dusk.  Open Farm Day is rain or shine. More information is available at or by calling the preserve at (860) 355-3716.
